Genre – Script Frenzy

So here’s the list of Genre’s as Script Frenzy presents them. (see below for what I consider a more accurate genre list in general). Based on the knowledge that I’m going to be attempting to write a film I can produce myself, I’m going to cut some of these genres out. Thus a new list of 7 Genre’s remains. (and yes I’m calling it 7 even though script frenzy groups some of them they really are separate.)

This is a list of some of my favorite movies in the genre’s I’m putting to the vote.

Action/Adventure – Pan’s Labrynth, the Golden Compass , Raiders of the Lost arc
Comedy - Animal House, Ghost Busters,
Drama - Fight Club,
Horror – Cloverfield, Jesus Christ Vampier Hunter, HellRaiser
Science Fiction/Fanasty – Serenity, Constantine, Lord of the Rings

You’ll actually notice that often there’s some cross over in genre. Ghostbusters could easily be called a Sci-Fi movie. Fight Club, though dark, could easily be called a Comedy. And so on. So vote till your heart is content.

http://www.filmsite.org/genres.html provides this list 11 Main Genres that cover the basis of all films.’

Action, Adventure, Comedy, Crime/Gangster, Drama, Epics/Historical, Horror, Musicals, Science Fiction, War, Westerns

Excuses & Script Frenzy

I know I know, I said originally I’d do a new Path to Publication video every 2 weeks.. and I think I managed to do three of them on that schedule.

Then the world too over with it’s whole – real worldieness.

bastard.

So yea, I mean this is how it is as a writer, or any kind of creative person. You have this idealistic creative dreamer side of “what ifs” and “ones days” and at the end of the month you have to pay the bills. So there is a delicate balance of making a living without falling to the Golden handcuffs.

I feel like I’ve maybe I’ve found a trap in the jobs I take. For almost a decade now I’ve worked in Film and TV production, and it’s fun, often inspiring and easy going (for the most part). But there in lies the rub, I feel like I am doing creative things, but for other people and thus maybe I slack on my own creative process even more. But I’m content, happy, at ease (for the most part).

I wrote my novel while I was working at a horrible customer service job (for the most part). It was, in a sense a rebellion against the job. So am I slacking now because I’m comfortable? Or am I really working 50 hours a week and need to use my free time to just veg out.

Script Frenzy

Well it’s still a few months away but it’s not too soon to start thinking about Script Frenzy (http://www.scriptfrenzy.org).

If you were with me in the fall you remember my run for Nanowrimo. Well Script Frenzy is the same thing, but for screen plays. Which makes it alot easier and a lot harder.

There’s a crucial difference between Novels and Scripts. Novels demand you let your imagination run, and your ink flow.

Scripts demand you say the most amount in the least amount of time. The key to script is rewriting, and rewriting and rewriting.

So it’s never too early to start thinking about your script for Script Frenzy. It’s funny I came here to talk about how Script Frenzy was odd because it was based on word count.. but as I went to check that info on the website i found this:

We’re moving the event to April, and changing the goal from 20,000 words to 100 pages.

And I have to say (having written 6 scripts in the past), this is a much more accurate goal for screen plays. In fact I’d actually say if you can finish 90 pages you’re gold.

I want to put this out there. There are 3 types of people doing script Frenzy.

1) The wanna be writers, who want to make a hollywood screenplay and sell it to the highest bidder for 6 figures.

2) the writer who just wants to see if he can get it done.

3) the independent film maker.

and I want to say, 100 pages is a very reasonable goal. it can be done, and in fact it can be done in a matter of days (like 2). Don’t look at this as a daunting task. It’s going to be easy, and along the way I’m going to give some tips I’ve picked up for writing screen plays and talk to those 3 different types of people as best I can.

Right now you’ve got months to go until SF starts in April, so just sit back and let your mind wander.

Oh yea My Script Frenzy Profile is at:
http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/eng/user/246963

I’m thinking of opening my script idea up to my viewers, in which I’d give out some choices in the weeks before Script Frenzy to guide my hand… like what Genre, sub genre, etc…
